Fitness for Service – The Finite Element Analysis Approach

The course focuses on Fitness for Service (FFS) requirements combined with structural analysis and pressure vessel lifespan assessment using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Typically, pressure vessel lifespan assessment requires periodic evaluations based on usage duration. If indications of damage are found, engineers must adhere to standard specifications such as ASME/API-579 Fitness for Service (FFS). At Level 3, Finite Element Analysis methods are commonly employed for structural analysis, referencing design standards such as ASME BPVC.VIII part 5. When structures exhibit complex geometries and loading conditions, engineers need to learn model building techniques and essential boundary condition specifications to obtain standardized and quality-assured calculation results. Participants will have hands-on experience using the ABAQUS software, widely utilized in the petrochemical industry.

OBJECTIVES

To provide students with an understanding of FFS requirements and the use of finite element software for monitoring and controlling the quality of structures and pressure vessels in accordance with specifications.
